Antonio banderas playing picasso in 33 dias, Antonio Banderas is painting himself into a corner. The 51-year-old Spanish-born actor has signed on to play Spain's most famous artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso, in a biopic, Variety reported.

Directed by Carlos Saura, "33 Días" ("33 Days"), covers the period that it took for Picasso to paint his famed mural, "Guernica," which captured his rage at the destruction of the Basque town of the same name in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.

It was a period of turmoil in Picasso's personal life and his relationship with French painter Dora Maar.
"[Picasso is] a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected," Banderas told the Spanish newspaper El Pais. "He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Málaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born."
