Alex Rodriguez expects to return to Yankees on Monday
In a radio appearance on New York's WFAN, Rodriguez said he expects to be in their lineup against the Texas Rangers, which would meet his goal of being game-ready by the conclusion of his rehab assignment, and he reiterated that hope before a Wednesday workout.
This time, unlike his rogue tweet that announced he'd be beginning a rehab assignment, Rodriguez's pronouncement was largely corroborated by the Yankees.
"That's the hope," general manager Brian Cashman told ESPN New York. "Let's get through the weekend and see where he is at and see if he is major league able."
Rodriguez, who like some two-dozen major league players is awaiting possible discipline from Major League Baseball for his alleged tie to South Florida's Biogenesis clinic, has been rehabilitating from offseason hip surgery, a process that began at the Yankees' Class A affiliates in South Carolina and Tampa, and has continued at Class AA Trenton (N.J.).
Monday, Rodriguez hit his first home run of his rehab assignment, but it has been a gradual process to work into shape. He's 5 for 28 with six strikeouts in his run through the Yankees' system. Rodriguez will join Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre (Pa.) Thursday.
By rule, Rodriguez's rehab assignment will expire on Monday, at which point he must be activated or return to rehabbing the injury at the club's facility in Tampa.
